Bisphosphonates and Implants

The prognosis of dental implants placed into people taking bisphosphonates at this time remains uncertain. Bisphosphonates slow bone turnover and this may influence the integration of the bone to the implant. The American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons make the following suggestions re implants being placed into subjects on bisphosphonates:

  1. Patients on bisphosphonates for <3 years. Do not represent a risk, provided they are not on corticosteroids or >70 years of age.
  2. Patients on bisphosphonates for >3 years, a drug holiday is recommended of 3-6 months in duration before dental implant placement.

We will discuss the issues with you before recommending treatment and suggest other treatment options, depending upon your case.
